Over 400 schools benefit from business training

Through DEEPEN’s business development services initiative over 400 private schools in Lagos have received training on how to become more efficient businesses.

Following a successful launch event in 2016 DEEPEN partnered with 6 Business Development Service (BDS) Providers to develop tailored programmes of support for private schools, especially low-cost schools. The programmes help schools strengthen their leadership and financial capacity and produce realistic School Development Plans.

Schools have participated in training modules such as human resource management, financial management and sales and marketing. One of the providers said the following of the initiative:

“We, at McOwen Consulting, are indeed very pleased to be part of DEEPEN’s Transformational team of business development service providers working withlow-cost primary school owners in Lagos state. The task has been quite daunting but it is worth the sacrifice entailed, given the ultimate goal of the programme-raising the standards of the schools…DEEPEN has invested so much in capacity building of the key actors, including Business Development Service Providers to achieve its avowed goal of transforming the school business into a sustainable one”Barr. ‘Femi Kolajo, CEO McOwen Consulting.

Results so far are overwhelmingly positive with three school associations now offering the programme to their members. Of the schools that have participated in the training 55% are now repeat customers and have already completed at least 2 training sessions. School proprietors had the following to say about the initiative

“I have learnt how to record my income and expenditure as well as placing myself on salary and run a separate account from the account’s account “– Francis Agbor (Financial Managemet Training, IBA, Lagos State)

“I have learnt how to be a good leader, organize my school very well and also how to hire staff”- Nkechi Obu (Human Resource Management Training for AFED, Alakija, Lagos State)

“To God be the Glory. With this Training, am okay to build the Nation” Anon.

The programmes are currently being piloted across Ojo, Alimosho, Badagry and other LGAS with the plan to scale up the initiative in the next academic year.
